Acoustic Neuroma - Treatment Option :
CyberKnife® Radiosurgery:
Radiosurgery was originally used for treatment of acoustic neuromas in the late 1960’s. Since that time more than 10,000 acoustic neuroma patients have been treated with this technique worldwide. The CyberKnife® is a very accurate (treatment is delivered with sub-millimeter precision) device that delivers high doses of radiation to the tumor, with little harm to important surrounding sensitive structures. Radiosurgery is performed by a team comprised of a neurosurgeon and/or ENT surgeon, a radiation oncologist, a medical physicist, and nursing staff. The expertise of a radiologist is often required in order to accurately delineate the tumor.
Almost any patient can be treated with CyberKnife® Radiosurgery for acoustic neuroma. Some patients who are particularly symptomatic, either from pressure symptoms, tinnitus, or imbalance, may be best treated with surgery, because surgery will relieve the symptoms more rapidly. In addition, certain large tumors (greater than 3.0 cm in size), are best treated with surgery because these tumors can sometimes swell and cause obstruction of the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. All other lesions are generally excellent candidates for CyberKnife® radiosurgery.
