Stereotactic Radiosurgery/Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy for Melanoma:
Uveal Melanoma
A number of institutions have reported local control rates in excess of 90% for melanoma lesions arising in the eye, using precision stereotactic radiotherapy or focal proton beam radiotherapy techniques (22,23,24). The small volume of these particular melanoma lesions allows very high-dose radiotherapy regimens to be used, which undoubtedly correlates with the reported high local control rates. The high radiotherapy doses have also produced significant ocular complications though, including neovascular glaucoma, retinopathy and optic neuritis, highlighting the need for continued research to define the optimal radiation dose, volume and technique for these lesions (22,23,24).
