Radiotherapy for Melanoma:
Primary treatment
Although melanoma is typically regarded as one of the “radioresistant” malignancies, a high percentage of primary lentigo maligna melanoma lesions have actually been cured by high dose per fraction radiotherapy, in patients who have received radiotherapy for superficially extensive lesions to avoid a disfiguring operation (10). Radiotherapy also appears to be a useful surgical adjuvant in primary melanoma of head and neck origin, providing a high regional control rate above the clavicles, allowing some patients to avoid a full neck dissection (11,12).
