Pulmonary Metastatic Disease
The lungs serve as a common metastatic site for a wide variety of primary malignancies, and sometimes, solitary or limited pulmonary metastases occur, without evidence of relapse elsewhere in the body. In these cases, 5-year disease free survival is possible in a substantial fraction, following surgical resection of the metastatic lesion(s) (16, 17, 18, 19).
As with primary bronchogenic carcinoma, there are patients that might otherwise be candidates for resection, but precluded by co-existing medical condition(s) or technically difficult lesion location. In these cases, for exactly the same reasons listed for early stage primary bronchogenic carcinoma patients, CyberKnife® radiosurgery may serve as a safe and effective treatment alternative for them, providing an alternative to radical surgery or uncontrolled metastatic disease (10). If a patient has limited pulmonary metastatic disease and no active disease elsewhere in the body, CyberKnife® radiosurgery may be a very reasonable treatment method, offering them a possibility of extended disease-free survival. |
