Specific Hepatic Lesions

Primary Biliary Neoplasms (Cholangiocarcinoma)

Primary biliary neoplasms are rare compared with primary hepatocellular carcinoma or hepatic metastases. Resection represents the treatment of choice but unfortunately, many of these lesions invade liver parynchema or other regional structures rendering them unresectable ( 7, 8).

External beam radiotherapy with infusional 5-fluoruracil chemotherapy may have a beneficial adjuvant effect in resected patients, and appears to have tumor suppressive activity against unresectable lesions, with some evidence of a radiation dose response effect, though unfortunately, local recurrence is the rule and cure in non-surgical patients is rare (18).
